MLB award winners by year

Each award starts in a different year, and that matters more than it sounds. Most Valuable Player entries begin in 1911, Cy Young Award entries begin in 1956, Rookie of the Year entries begin in 1947, Gold Glove entries begin in 1957 and Silver Slugger entries begin in 1980. A season before those dates has no winner because there was no award to win, so an empty row is a fact about the calendar. Say it the other way round and you get a sentence nobody wrote but everybody reads: that Babe Ruth never won a Gold Glove.

The Negro Leagues had none of them. There was no Most Valuable Player vote, no Cy Young Award, no Gold Glove and no Silver Slugger in Black baseball, so no player from those leagues appears anywhere in these lists however he played. When you look at a season page and see a Negro League section under an award section, that ordering is not a judgement — it is two different kinds of record sitting on one page.

Some years have one winner rather than one per league. The Cy Young Award was given across both leagues at once from its first year until the late 1960s, and the Rookie of the Year and the first Gold Gloves did the same. A single name on those rows is the complete record for that season, not half of one. Rows here name the league where the record names one, and say so plainly where it does not.

Ties are kept as ties. A handful of seasons ended with two players sharing an award, and both are listed. A table built on the assumption of one winner per league per year silently drops one of them, which is the kind of error nobody notices because the page still looks complete.

The leaderboards on the season pages are arithmetic we did on the season lines published here, which is why the site draws the two in different materials. A page that presents an estimate and a record in the same ink is claiming more than it knows.
